Warriors Defeat FranklinvillePosted Monday, January 12, 2009 by Brian Cook Salamanca 60, Franklinville 49
SALAMANCA ‹ The Lady Warriors finally put it all together just in time to topple league-leading Franklinville on Tuesday night. With an admirable defensive performance on center Samantha Kopp, Katie Auge (17 points, including a career-high three treys) and the Lady Warriors led by as many as 20 points in a 60-49 victory. Kopp, clearly frustrated with the smothering defense, finished with 23 points and 16 reboards ‹ but scored just seven in the second half ‹ entirely from the free throw line. The loss was the first league defeat for Kopp and New York State-ranked Franklinville. ³She got her points, but no open looks,² said Lady Warrior coach Colleen Wiedman. ³Katie (Auge) did an awesome job,² she added, while at the same time her team was able to play straight-up man-to-man defense without resorting to any gimmicks to lock down Kopp. After leading by just one after the first quarter, Salamanca expanded the cushion to 10 at the break as Ashley Abrams continued to look resurgent after breaking the 1,000 point barrier over the holiday break. She finished with 16 points in just three quarters of play. Brittany Haines added 12 points. The win pushes the Lady Warriors to 5-2, 3-0 in league play and gives them sole command of first place in the CCAC II East. Auge also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
